10 Years of the COATC
It was October 1996 when then-Governor Voinovich, Senator John Glenn, and a variety of public and private sector officials joined in the transition ceremony to
mark the occasion of the transfer of the Newark Air Force Base to the Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority and the
start of the nation's first privatization-in-place of an Air Force workload.
Thus, October 1, 2006 marks the 10 year anniversary of the Central Ohio Aerospace and Technology Center. It was on this date in 1996 when
ownership of "The Base" officially transferred to the Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority. The date is also the date when the Air Force's Privatization-in-Place of the guidance repair workload took place.
Boeing - Heath celebrated 10 years since its taking over the privatized workload with an event on September 28, 2006. Roger Krone, President of Network and Space Systems for Boeing IDS, called the privatization-in-place "wildly successful." The Ohio native
said, "I am reminded of the strong work ethic in Ohio," remarking about his time spent with Boeing personnel that day.
The Port Authority's $11.3 million Air Force mortgage on the former Newark Air Force Base will be fulfilled on October 1. A mortgage burning
ceremony was held as part of the Boeing - Heath 10-year celebration.
The Port Authority also commissioned a Cat's Meow commemorative of the anniversary that depicts the Newark Air Force Station circa 1981. Look
for opportunities to obtain a copy through charitable contributions in the future.
